Solomon Mine is part of the FMG major expansion in the Pilbara. The company’s three hub strategy will see them own three major iron ore operations in close proximity and work off centralised infrastructure. Solomon Mine is expected to start producing ore in 2012 and ramping up to 60 million tonnes by June 2013.
Thiess won the major $100 million contract with Fortescue Metals Group for development works on Phase one of the Solomon Iron Ore Mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.
The 18 month contract is for initial pioneering and mine establishment works such as:
» Haul roads
» Stockpile pads and the
» Mining of early ore and waste
The contract win positions Thiess well to bid for further works on the mine development and the main services contract which commences in late 2012.
Field crew - 14 days on and 7 days off. 12 hour shifts, currently day only. Rotational shifts will commence in October 2011
Staff - 8 days on 6 days off.
Flights are from Perth to Paraburdoo each Monday.
You can only get to site by the bus transfer provided. Personal vehicles are not allowed on camp or project site.

There are two crib breaks per shift for 30 minutes each. The breaks are timed to suit the operational requirements. Crib huts have cold water, coffee/tea, pie warmer and microwave facilities.
If you are staying in camp lunch must be collected the night prior or at breakfast. Containers for lunch and snacks are provided at the mess.
Reception is open 7 days a week from 7:00hours to 17:00hours.
The Solomon Phase 1 Project site has a zero drug and alcohol tolerance.
Employees will be randomly selected for drug and alcohol on a regular basis. The Drug & Alcohol Screen is supervised at all times by medical staff.
You will be provided with uniforms and required personal protection equipment. All personnel and visitors must have long-sleeve hi-vis shirt, full length pants, lace up steel-cap boots. In the field, protective glasses, hard hat and gloves must be worn at all time.
EFTPOS is available on site at the convenience store. A maximum amount of $50 is allowed per withdraw.
Rooms are equipped with a TV with Foxtel package, bar fridge, A/C, ensuite shower and toilet.
The rooms are motel style accommodation with linen, towels, soap supplied. Rooms are cleaned every 7 days. Generally, it’s a different room each rotation.
On the last day of shift your room must be packed before the start of work and your personal gear put into locker the morning of fly out day. There is a huge locker room which enables you to store gear on site. Camp will issue a padlock once the room key is returned. When you arrive back on site you will collect a new key from the office, collect your gear from the locker and find your new room.
On check out day there showers available for use before getting on the bus.
The camp store sells basic items; soft drink, chocolate, tissues, toothpaste, ladies supplies etc
The gym has adequate equipment – multi gym, free weights, cycles, cross trainer etc..
Initial induction is required then just sign sheet in/out when you use.
The facility has a Life Style Coordinator which runs daily classes which range from boxing, outdoor cross training to pilates.
A free wireless network is provided across the camp
For personal connections the only coverage is the Telstra Next G USB. If speed is an issue this may be preferable for those who need a fast connection, after 6.00pm the camp wireless can slow down due to traffic volumes
A large number of washing and drying facilities are available in the laundry room. Washing powder is supplied. If you suffer from allergies alternate powder is available from the convenience store
The mess hall is new and well catered with plenty of choice. They even have pre made sandwiches.
The wet mess has a limit of 4 standard drinks i.e. 4 mid beers or 4 mid UDL’s or 2 wines per person. You must show your room key to purchase drinks which is then recorded.
Camp also includes gym with a access to phones and internet terminals as well as wireless internet across the camp.
All rooms come with a television that has Fox cable TV. There is a range of channels covering all free to air plus Discovery, lifestyle, movies, sport etc..
The only available mobile phone coverage on site or in any of the local areas is Telstra Next G/3G. You cannot buy mobile phones on site. Pre-paid cards and mobile recharge are available from the convenience store.
