Douglas Thompson was appointed as CIMIC Group’s Mining and Mineral Processing Executive and Thiess’ Managing Director in August 2017. He is responsible for leading CIMIC Group’s operating companies Thiess and Sedgman. He returned to Thiess after playing a key role at CPB Contractors as Executive General Manager Queensland, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand, setting those regions up for a multi-year growth program. Douglas brings more than 20 years’ experience in coal and metalliferous mining operations globally, having previously been Thiess’ Executive General Manager, Australia & Pacific. He has a strong industry reputation for driving operational excellence and developing greater in-house capability to deliver more value to clients. He has held senior positions on major Australian and international mine sites, giving him an in-depth understanding of all facets of operational management, including significant mine expansions and upgrades. This includes leadership roles with Gold Fields Limited in South Africa. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mining) with Honours and a National Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, and has completed an International Executive Development Program with the University of Cambridge and the University of Witwatersrand.
Executive General Manager Australia East
Abdul leads Thiess’ Australia East operations, developing a performance-driven culture and commitment to collaborative, long-term client relationships. Since joining CIMIC Group 17 years ago, Abdul has held a number of leadership positions including MD/CEO with Habtoor Leighton Group Contractors. Previously, Abdul was General Manager Pre-Contracts and Risk, having served as Thiess’ Commercial and Risk Manager for the Australian Mining business since 2011, and as Commercial Manager for Thiess Services in the Middle East. His national and international experience gives him a strong understanding of the diverse demands of establishing and managing contracts and associated corporate governance in a variety of country contexts. With an international background in law and project management for major infrastructure projects, and a proven ability to ensure strong and accountable governance for projects and organisations, Abdul’s diverse capability is an asset to Thiess’ growing business. He holds a Bachelor and Master of Science (Civil Engineering) and post-graduate qualifications in Law from Australia and the United States of America.
Executive General Manager Africa, Australia West & Mongolia
Spencer is responsible for Thiess’ Africa, Australia West and Mongolia operations and strategy. Since joining CIMIC Group in 2007, he has held a number of senior operational and leadership positions. With experience spanning more than 20 years across mining, telecommunications and technology sectors, Spencer delivers best-for-business outcomes by developing strong relationships with key stakeholders including clients, suppliers and subcontractors. His strong and collaborative leadership style promotes project and operational excellence, driving greater value and positive outcomes for our clients. Spencer holds an Advanced Diploma in Applied Science and a Foundation Certificate in Project Management.
Executive General Manager Indonesia & Americas (Acting)
Cluny joined Thiess in March 2018 and leads Thiess’ operations and strategy for both Indonesia and the Americas. An experienced global executive, he brings with him more than 25 years of experience in mining and construction across five continents. He has a proven track record in delivering stakeholder value, built upon his deep operational expertise, extensive international market insight and commercial acumen. Cluny drives a market commitment to long-term business relationships and a team commitment to inclusive leadership. He holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Memorial University of Newfoundland and has completed Senior Executive Programs at INSEAD and Columbia University.
General Manager Health, Safety & Security
Mark has a wealth of strategic and operational health and safety expertise, fine-tuned over more than 25 years in the construction, mining, energy and services sectors. A passionate advocate of everyone safe everyday, Mark drives a safety culture of accountability through clearly defined lead indicators, modelling expected behaviour, and developing innovative education programs for senior executives, site leadership teams and front-line employees. His proactive leadership style empowers teams and workforces to deliver transformational change in the way tasks are approached both individually and collectively. Mark is a member of the Minerals Councils of Australia Health and Safety Committee and holds credentials in System Safety Accident Investigation and post-graduate qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety.
Anthony De Domenico
Executive General Manager Strategy & Growth
Anthony leads Thiess’ Strategy & Growth team, guiding how Thiess designs new services, collaborates on market opportunities, develops innovations and expands our operational footprint. Since joining CIMIC Group in 2002, Anthony has held a number of senior leadership positions. Most recently, he led the Group’s dry hire business, FleetCo, achieving outstanding growth in a short time to advance the business in Australia and set the foundation for global expansion. Anthony is known for driving excellence and value for clients and projects while building high-performing teams. He pairs operational expertise, having 16 years’ experience in mining and a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, with his strategic capability, built on general manager and other leadership roles and his Master of Business Administration.
Executive General Manager People, Capability & Communication (Acting)
Elizabeth was appointed Executive General Manager People, Capability & Communication (Acting) in November 2019. Elizabeth has held several senior people leadership positions, most recently as Thiess’ Group Manager – Governance, Systems and Mobility. She has led global teams, successfully managing human resources, industrial relations, governance and employee engagement initiatives. As an experienced people and change management professional, Elizabeth is committed to creating and maintaining a highly engaged workforce. She promotes the benefits of an energised, enabled and empowered team to deliver exceptional organisational outcomes. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from The University of Queensland, a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, Skills and Ethics from Griffith University and has been admitted to the legal profession as a Lawyer of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
Executive General Manager Assets
Graduating with honours in Civil Engineering, Bob has more than 30 years’ contracting experience. With a strong background in project management, his expertise spans roads, bridges, underground works, dams, mine infrastructure and coal handling plants in Australia and overseas including Fiji, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam. Since joining Thiess in 1995, Bob has played an integral role in the growth of the company’s mining business. His contribution to Thiess’ success includes all aspects of open-cut coal mining and processing operations. As Executive General Manager Assets, Bob continues to work closely with personnel across our mining operations to drive innovation and optimise project delivery.
Chief Financial Officer
Craig has more than 28 years' experience in chartered accounting and contracting. He is a Fellow to the Chartered Accountants, Australia and New Zealand and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD). He holds a Bachelor of Business from the Queensland University of Technology and has completed the AICD International Directors' Course as well as CFO Executive Education at Wharton. For over 21 years, Craig has held senior positions including the role of Finance Director, APAC and Africa for a global EPCM provider. During his time at Thiess, he has held senior finance, commercial and operational positions including the roles of Executive General Manager, Assets and General Manager Finance and Commercial for Thiess' Australian Mining operations. Craig has been Thiess' Chief Financial Officer since August 2016 and today holds CFO financial leadership accountability across the CIMIC mining operating companies of Thiess, FleetCo and Sedgman. He is renowned for his strong leadership, commercial acumen and ability to link both commercial and operational drivers to achieve improved business outcomes.
Executive General Manager Technical Services
Shaun was appointed Executive General Manager Technical Services in February 2019. He brings more than 25 years of experience in the global mining industry, most recently as the Senior Vice President, Technical Services of AngloGold Ashanti in South Africa, a role he held since 2013. With experience spanning mining operations, technology and innovation, and project program management, Shaun sees technical excellence as fundamental to any successful mining organisation. Through leadership and professionalism, Shaun has successfully implemented and influenced business planning processes, driven robust project pipeline management and achieved business improvement through the implementation of innovative technologies and processes. Shaun is a people orientated leader who is passionate about achieving best-practice technical mining outcomes through a highly-capable technical team. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Witwatersrand, a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from the University of Cape Town and has completed an Advanced Executive Development Program at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University in the USA.
Trish has more than 20 years’ experience providing legal advice to mining and construction industries. She joined Thiess in 2005 and was appointed General Counsel and Company Secretary in 2014. Trish is responsible for advising in the areas of legal, ethical and compliance issues across the business while managing a global legal team. Graduating with honours in law from the Queensland University of Technology, Trish trained at premier law firms Mallesons and Pinsent Masons in Australia and Ireland as well as serving as a Judge’s Associate in the Federal Court of Australia. Her experience drives a relationship focussed approach, delivering best for business outcomes with integrity.
