The Thiess Indigenous Pre-Apprenticeship program has passed another successful milestone with the graduation of the second annual intake of trainees.
Twelve Indigenous participants from Brisbane and regional Queensland were honoured at the 2011 graduation ceremony and awards dinner.
The program is part of Thiess’ commitment to help ‘close the gap’ between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities by providing real career opportunities. By 2014, Thiess’ goal is to have at least 25 percent Indigenous representation in the apprentice workforce. Of the twelve participants in the 2011 program, eight will continue their career partnership with Thiess while four have been offered positions at Hastings Deering.
Emma Jenkins is the only female in this year’s 20-week training program. The 17 year old demonstrated her commitment to her career goal by moving to Brisbane from her home in Cairns. Emma’s strong personality played a large part in earning the Best Attitude Award of the program. She will commence as an apprentice fitter at the Thiess Archerfield Workshop in January.
Tarquin Singleton also had to make the personal sacrifice of moving from his hometown of Cairns. He was unemployed before entering the program and now has great career prospects as he joins Thiess as an apprentice fabricator.
Also from Cairns, Kyle Ferguson was awarded the Broncos Indigenous All Star Award by Broncos identities Paul Dyer and Mick Hancock who attended the ceremony. Kyle will become an apprentice fitter at Collinsville Coal.
For his hard work, Rhys Cobbo from Murgon was honoured twice, receiving the HDIT Trainers Choice Award and the Thiess/HD Excellence Award. Rhys was recognised for his willingness to learn, excellent teamwork, positive attitude, outstanding professional and personal attitude, and his eagerness to lead a healthier lifestyle.
The program is financially supported by the Queensland and Federal Governments.
