Diverting millions of tonnes of waste from landfill:

  • Located in Al Dhafra
  • Abu Dhabi’s largest landfill facility
  • Recycling concrete and asphalt will divert millions of tonnes of waste from landfill
  • Recycled material will be used to make road base and general fill aggregates, preserving virgin materials

In May 2010, Thiess Services Middle East took an important step towards environmentally sustainable waste-management practices with the opening of a specialised processing plant in Abu Dhabi to recycle debris from construction and demolition projects.

The plant, located at Abu Dhabi’s largest landfill facility at Al Dhafra 70 kilometres outside of the city centre, will meet the requirements of a 15-year waste management concession contract with the Centre of Waste Management Abu Dhabi. The recycling of concrete and asphalt will divert millions of tonnes of waste from landfill.

It is sorted and crushed to make road base and general fill aggregates for new construction and infrastructure projects. The plant is the largest and most sophisticated of its type in the Middle East.
