Located five kilometres south of Muswellbrook in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Mt Arthur Coal is an open cut mine, producing thermal coal used for power generation.
Thiess has supported BHP at Mt Arthur Coal since 2017, first providing load and haul services and then additional mining services, including mining overburden and coal at the southern end of the operation.
In 2018, BHP expanded its agreement and the scope of Thiess’ operations to include additional services as mine operator of the southern end of the Mt Arthur Coal operations (the Ayredale and Roxburgh Pits).
Under this new contract, Thiess is undertaking mine design, planning and scheduling services, drill and blast operations, overburden removal and coal mining. This scope of works will create up to 300 permanent, locally-based roles.
Thiess has a long history in the Hunter Valley (dating back more than 80 years) and provides mining services at three mines, including Mt Arthur Coal.
Committed to offering full-time employment options in the region for employees, Thiess has a proven track record working with both the community and local suppliers.
