Peak Downs and Caval Ridge are two open cut coking coal mines, owned by BMA (BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance) and located in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, near Moranbah in Queensland.
Thiess first began providing services at Peak Downs in 2017, delivering FleetCo hire equipment and maintenance services to the BMA operation.
This scope of work developed into a $440 million contract to provide mining services, including the continuation of FleetCo asset solutions, at both Peak Downs and Caval Ridge.
Under the three and a half-year contract, Thiess will safely deliver overburden removal to support BMA’s production requirements at each mine:
- 90 million bank cubic metres (bcms) at Peak Downs
- 45 million bcms at Caval Ridge.
Across the sites, Thiess has mobilised five fleets, including four 600 tonne Liebherr 996B excavators and an 800t Liebherr 9800 excavator. Each is supported by Caterpillar 793 and 797 trucks.
At full capacity, the equipment fleets will be maintained and operated by a team of around 450-500 people.
Start-up works began in December 2017/January 2018. Since then, the team has safely and reliably delivered against its production targets, on time and on budget, and contributed to local employment opportunities.
